I've mentioned this before, but today's NYT reminds me: there's still no good way to view lengthy puzzle titles in Black Ink. You can choose the elided version or the truncated version, yet there's no easy path (in Black Ink) to seeing the complete title. The uneasy path is to click in the title area, select all with command-A, copy, then paste into another application.

The competition: Across Lite 2.0 displays the full title correctly if you stretch the window enough. It does some odd things if the window is too small. Wordplay truncates the title.

The complete title says:

"NY Times, Sun, Mar 01, 2009 GOOD AND BAD (Note: For the answer to each starred clue, including the first letter is good; dropping it is bad.)" - Robert W. Harris / Will Shortz

The NY Sun puzzle for 2/6 has multi-character answers which I filled in as PBAU. They were marked wrong. When I revealed the answers, these squares showed "Pb...". Notice the minuscule "b". One problem is that PBAU isn't matched against PbAu. Another is that there's no way to inspect the full text of the squares. Control-clicking doesn't let me edit them and hovering doesn't reveal them. (I opened the .puz in emacs to find the full values.)

I downloaded the latest Black Ink (1.1.6 - 530) hoping to fix the bugs with multiple letter entry. Unfortunately, I think there are still issues. In the 2008-01-11 Sunday NY Times puzzle, for example: when I enter the correct two letters into the second square of 2-Down and check the word (or entire puzzle), the first letter is marked as red, even though I know I have the correct two letters. Also, when I reveal, only one letter is shown there (likewise for the other circled squares).

I like the interface of Black Ink *so* much better than the clunky Across Lite, but the bugs are definitely distracting. Any thoughts on another go at fixing the multi-letter entry for the next version?

I'm getting close to a beta build for Black Ink 1.1, which includes some bug fixes you all have reported, as well as some modest new features.

If you're feeling up to the task of beta testing for this release, please contact me and let me know you'd like to join up. The type of beta tester I'm looking for should satisfy these characteristics:

- Cares deeply about the evolution of Black Ink
- Willing to try out new beta releases even if they don't contain flashy new features
- Committed to reporting bugs and workflow problems when encountered
- Willing to subscribe to a low-volume mailing list for beta testers

If you're interested, please drop me a line and let me know the email address you'd like to use for subscribing to the discussion list. Also, it would be nice to know which type(s) of machine(s) you're running Black Ink on, so I know how well the coverage is.

I'd love to have you help out if you feel you have the time to pitch in and help. It will make me feel a lot better finishing up 1.1 if I know I have a good core group of testers to try out the builds. Thanks!

Daniel
