A common situation: Application disks often come with manuals that can't be accessed from the help menu of the app. You must manually find the manual and open it. Those manuals, usually pdf, will often just lie there in some folder, and usually we forget that it even exists. Sometimes we even must manually copy the manual from the installation disk, and sometimes we need to download manuals from the vendors site. But where do we put them? How can you remember what manualls you have for the app?

An elegant way is to use FastScripts application specific folders, and put an alias of the pdf document (or several such documents) in the application specific folder. Whenever that app is frontmost, all those manuals will be directly listed in the FastScripts menu!

So whenever you need manuals/user guides etc, just look in the Help menu and in FastScripts menu!

/Harald

Hey - new user here, I really like FastScripts Lite and wish I'd found this long ago!

One minor issue though. I happen to use the Canadian keyboard, which is identical to the US keyboard except it gives me the chance to have the Canadian flag in my menu bar. If I set up a keyboard shortcut while using the Canadian keyboard though, it doesn't display properly.

for instance, I go to the Preferences > Script Shortcuts panel and click in the shortcut column to add a shortcut of, let's say, command-option-Z to do something. All that the table view displays is "command option". No Z. The shortcut works properly, it just doesn't display in here.

Oddly enough if I switch to the US keyboard, it magically appears.

You can try this yourself by turning on the Canadian keyboard. System Prefs > International > Input Menu; select both the "US" and "Canadian" keyboards in the list, and also select "Show input menu in menu bar."

Then choose the Canadian flag in the menu bar. Try to set up a shortcut as described above. It only shows the command and option characters. Now choose the US flag in the menu bar, and select the shortcut in the table view. Poof, it magically displays command-option-Z.

Of course this is not a showstopper, everything works fine, it's just kind of odd.

Thanks for providing this very useful app!
steve

Hi,

I am a new user of FastScripts and am very impressed by the enhanced execution speed of scripts invoked by FastScripts.

As a novice user, I'm stumped by a simple problem. Let's say I have two compiled scripts, "ScriptA.scpt" and "ScriptB.scpt", in the same script library "MainLibrary". I want "ScriptA" to invoke/run "ScriptB" via FastScripts in order to retain the execution speed benefit of FastScripts. I tried the following code within "ScriptA", but when I run "ScriptA" from FastScripts, "ScriptB" is not invoked, and an alert is sounded:

tell application "FastScripts" to tell top level script library "/Library/Scripts" to tell script library "MainLibrary" to invoke script item "ScriptB"

I found that if I save "ScriptA" as an applet ("ScriptA.app") and run the "ScriptA" applet via FastScripts, then it does invoke "ScriptB". But I would prefer that "ScriptA" be a compiled script rather than an applet. Is there some way to get a compiled script to invoke another compiled script via FastScripts?

Thank you in advance for your help.

bmose

Just installed FastScriptsLite into my My Applications folder where I keep all non-system bundled software. I then double clicked on it and clicked through the intro pane and then double clicked on the listed app to "open". Then I placed it manually into my Prefs/Startup items. But since there was no "New" menu item - it looked exactly like my old scripts menu - I thought maybe, for some reason it was not working in the installed location, so I reinstalled into my Applications folder to check. Everything the same - no sign of an open app (the menu bar still has the Finder items listed, it is not in the Dock, there is no new Fastscripts Menu )! So, then I tried to trash the new installation but neither the copy in the Apps folder or the copy in the My Apps folder will delete since they are both supposedly "open". Since there is no sign of them being open, I can't seem to quit either of them in order to trash one of them or even figure out how to use either/or!!

Also:

"If you use FastScripts Lite regularly, you will probably want to configure your Login Items to launch FastScripts when you log in.
With well over 2000 scripts on my machine, 1,400+ of them in my User's Scripts folder, FastScripts takes so long to start that I am effectively denied use of my triggered scripts after a restart or login for more than a minute before the Fastscripts Icon replaces the spinner icon in my menu bar.

After a frustrating morning of restarts brought on by another problem (which is unrelated to this one which has been a problem for some time now), I'm seriously considering the unpleasant necessity of replacing all 46 of my FastScripts hot keys with Quicksilver triggers because QS starts up quickly and I can get on with using my machine's scripts by running them from there. FS is not scaling well, unfortunately, or perhaps I'm just pushing the envelope.

I realize you have a backward compatibility problem, Daniel, but the script below finds the paths to the 2,615 scripts on my startup volume in 0.48 seconds [dual-core G5/2.3 tower, OS X 10.4.8]:

set Scpts to paragraphs of (do shell script "mdfind -onlyin / 'kMDItemContentType == \"com.apple.applescript.script\"'")

while this one takes a minute and twenty seconds just to find the scripts in my Scripts folder, never mind the whole startup volume:

tell application "Finder" to set S to files of (entire contents of (path to scripts folder from user domain)) where its name extension is "scpt"

so clearly you're using Finder technology to access the files on my system rather than Spotlight technology.
Daniel;

I'd love to have FastScripts change the Finder label on scripts with FastScripts hot keys so I could find them in the Finder as well. That could be a preference setting: "Label Keyed Scripts in Finder Windows". Of course if you make which are keyed scriptable, I can do that myself.

Adam

EDIT: Problem solved by Version 2.3

I have over 1700 scripts and handlers in over 300 folders in my Scripts folder. Somewhere around 30 of them have hot keys assigned, and it won't surprise you to know that I can't always remember all of them.

To find out what they are now I have to look at the contents of all the top-level folders in the FastScripts menu, or command-select any script and scroll down that list to see them (that window doesn't enable sorting by key). I'd love to have an AppleScript or menu hook for reviewing my hot keys quickly - as a menu item : "HotKeys" or 'tell application "FastScripts" to set {myKeys, ScriptName} to blah blah'

Hi Daniel,

By mistake I left a script in debug format (I am using Script debugger) and when I tried to run it it simply crash Fastscript. Would it be possible to have the script run in debug mode anyway? or at the very least warn me that it cannot effectively run the selected script...

Thx!

Michel Lemieux

Firstly let me say thanks for FastScripts, it's a terrific timesaver. Keeping in with the whole keyboard loving power user vibe I'd like to suggest an (imho) improvement.

I'm often tweaking scripts, and it's a bit of a drag to dig through the menu to find the one I want. So: how about a special key that puts FastScripts into "edit script" mode? Hit the system-wide, user-defined trigger. FastScripts' icon changes colour to indicate that it's waiting for you to hit another key combo. Typing an assigned shortcut then opens the relevant script in its default editor. Time = saved! It's effectively like option-clicking the menu item, only without even having to open the menu. Another system wide trigger would let you reveal the script with its shortcut, as if you'd shift-clicked it in the menu. Typing an undefined shortcut or hitting escape returns FastScripts to normal mode.

No idea how difficult that would be to implement, but it'd be verrrry convenient for this script aficionado...

Ian

Hi Daniel,

I had a small request for an upcoming update of FastScript:

Would it be possible to have labeled folders appears as such in the FS menu?
I tend to file all the script rated to a givien project under each FS "Application" folder but would find lovely if I could navigate to subfolder by color rather than text... i know i am lazy that way, but that is also the reason I started scripting... ;)

Thanks again for a great product!

Michel

I just found a cool hint at Mac OSX Hints that uses a 1-line script to open the Apple color picker in applications that don't use the color picker. (See http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060408050920158&lsrc=osxh)

The script is ridicuously short:

choose color

That's it.

Now, when I bring this script up in Launchbar, it works fine, but when I run it from Fastscripts, it locks things up. Just wondering why. Thanks.

Doug
