Hello,

I think that FelxTime is a great app. But i am wondering if i can use it to track some activities but not as a reversal countdown but as a stopwatch. For example it would be very usefull for me if i start counting up the time (as a stopwatch) and at any given period of time i get an alarm or when i reach some duration. I think that the conceptual diference between counting down time or counting up is that with the first one you asume a finishing time, but with the second one you have some finishing time in mind (or not) but you could go longer or shorter if you feel that way at any given time.

The practical uses of this that came to my mind are for example, in fintness training, i start to count up time and every 1 minute i set an alarm, so i have 1 minute to do 1 series of an exercise, then 1 minute to rest and then again. Some days i would want to do 4 series and maybe other i would want to do 5 or even 6 but i dont know it before.

Other practical use is to use FlexTime as a stopwatch. Do some search on the internet and try to find a good stopwatch with a good design and user interface (as FelxTime have) for the Mac, i can not find any, thats why i would love to use FelxTime as a stopwatch too.

Excuse my for my English, i know it is not good, but i hope you could understand me.

Thanks,

Marcelo :)

Some Sugs:

- It would be great to have an option to leave a gap at the beginning or end of a given step. Currently, I have to insert a step called "Gap" between every other step so that the instructions of one step don't overwrite the bell from a previous one.

- Currently, if I'm playing back a routine and go forward or back between steps, the spoken commands and sounds all step on top of one another. Ideally, changing steps would cause that step's audio to stop.

- It would be nice to be able to scroll across a long step. Partiularly when writing the routines, I find myself just wanting to hear the ending of a step.

- Could be good to have an option to number the steps. If for instance you have a long routine, it can be helpful to see what step you're on, both when writing and when playing back.

- The Mac system sounds work, however for yoga/meditation it would be nice to include some options for deeper, longer sounds. Being able to simply insert your own sound FX would be nice too.

- "Export to iTunes" is a great feature. It would be great to be able to also include background music from iTunes. (I think iYoga does this, although it lacks other features.)

- Ditto images -- could be useful to insert stills and moving images.

- If the above happens, it would be really cool to be able to create a routine, with images or video, export it to iTunes as a Quicktime file, then watch it on your TV as a make-your-own yoga video. Lots of potential here!

Thanks,
Brad

I was checking out FlexTime and I ran into a small bug with it reseting the text when switching between Show and Speak Text.

My steps:

1. Opened the included Break Reminder file.

2. Clicked the Take a Break Activity

3. Changed the drop down for "At Start" to "Say Text" from "Show Text".

4. Text changes from "Take a break!" to "No Message"

I would expect it to maintain the text so I don't have to type the message again. Also, strangely, if I change the text and leave the text field as the input point, then change the drop down back to "Show Text", the text stays. Although it's not specifically tied to having the text field selected for input. I can click the text field after just opening the file, and then change the drop down and the "No Message" behavior comes back.

Fairly annoying, but small in the big picture.

Patrick

Maybe I'm missing it and it's already there somewhere, but it seems like there should be a way to see the total number of minutes in a routine. For example, I'm trying to set up a routine for my workday that spreads my energy around to the various projects I need to work on. I want to set it up so the whole routine "controls" the six hours I spend "working." I've set up the activities I want to pursue, but now I'm trying to establish the duration of each. There should be a way for me to either a) see the total duration for the routine, or b) allow the user to set a total duration for the routine, and then, as I change the duration of each activity, have that activity duration deducted from the total -- this would let me know how many minutes I have left to "spend" on the remaining activities.

The first one is probably easier to set up, but the latter might be more "fun" to use :-)

Anyway, that's my idea.

First off...FlexTime is a great application. Nice work and thank you.

My primary use for the software is for timing the steps in film processing. FlexTime is well suited for this as I can enter times for each step in the processing routine, start the routine and then not have to touch the computer again until it's done (don't really want to get photo chemicals on my macbook pro and all). I can also save routines for different film and developer combinations...fantastic.

Now a couple of small suggestions...

1.) Countdown or warning at the end of of a step.

I'd love an option to turn on a countdown or warning at the end of a step. Something as simple as a tick on the second for the last 5-10 seconds would be perfect. "tick-tick-tick-tick-ding! next step" Minuteur does this as an example (another great app for single-step timing).

2.) Allow specifying an interval time in addition to (or instead of) a number of intervals.

When processing film, you have to agitate the container every minute within a given step. FlexTime's "At Intervals" option is almost perfect for this. For example, in an 8 minute step, I can say "At Intervals: 7 times between start and finish play sound X", which will cue me to agitate the container every minute on the minute in the step.

This works, however from a usability perspective it's not immediately obvious how the intervals will be calculated. I had to try a couple different values before figuring out the right one (the value that would line up the interval time on the minute). Had I been able to specify a time value (Every 1 minute play this sound) I would have gotten it right on the first try.

Also, if the total step time is not a whole minute, say 7.5 mins, I don't think it's possible to have the intervals line up on the minute. Not a huge deal, sure, but sometimes I'm juggling other things like pouring the chemicals for the next step and being able to predict the next agitation at a glance is nice.

Best Regards,
Chris

I'm evaluating FlexTime to help me keep some exercises on track during a little lightweight knee rehab. I've got a routine to maintain a count of 15 seconds with a pause of 3 seconds between each iteration, but it'd be really nice if FlexTime could let me know how many times I've gone through the routine -- or, better yet, to count down and stop after a set number of repetitions.

This sounds like the sort of thing that'd be really easy with some AppleScript, but I haven't learned enough of it yet to be useful. Are there sample scripts along these lines somewhere I can use as a starting point? Ideally the repetition count would be displayed large enough to be seen across the room (or, perhaps, spoken).

Also, it'd be great to be able to start and pause FlexTime using the Apple Remote Control - any way to get that to work?

Thanks!

The "Previous" button has a rewind icon, and as such I expect it to take me back to the most recent activity boundary. I use FlexTime exclusively for a Merlin Mann 10+2 routine, and my main interaction with FlexTime is when I return to my computer and want to restart the 10-minute work session.

If that's not what the "Previous" button is supposed to do, please tell me about (or add) a button that does work that way.

I'm also not sure why "Reset" (with the rewind-to-beginning icon) *stops* the routine. Why not just rewind to the beginning and have a separate stop button? Or relabel/change the icon for "Reset" to be more accurate?

Ryan Platte

Setting "Run script" cues via AppleScript

(Oh, how meta!)

So what I'm trying to do is to set up a set of AppleScripts so I can enter a time in text mode in Quicksilver and have FlexTime make a new (temporary) routine on the fly with a single action to count down the time entered, then run a script to display a message, play a sound, and close the routine as the finishing cue.

I've got it almost all worked out: I have a script with which I can use Quicksilver to open up a new FlexTime document, set the time and start it counting down, and another script that I can set as a Finishing Cue, which plays my sounds, displays my message, and closes the window.

What I can't seem to figure out is how to set the finishing cue to call the second script from within the first (Quicksilver-triggered) AppleScript. I can set non-script finishing cues; for example:

tell application \"FlexTime\"
set action of finishing cue of first activity of document \"Untitled Routine\" to \"Play sound\"

set parameter of finishing cue of first activity of document \"Untitled Routine\" to \"Glass\"
end tell

but the equivalent syntax for setting a script as a finishing cue doesn't work:

tell application \"FlexTime\"
set action of finishing cue of first activity of document \"Untitled Routine\" to \"Run Script\"

set parameter of finishing cue of first activity of document \"Untitled Routine\" to \"BotBook:Users:adpeters:Desktop:QSFTNotify.scpt\"
end tell

will set the action correctly (to Run Script), but gives me an "NSUnknownKeyScriptError" and doesn't actually set the script file to run. I've double-checked that the path to the file is correct. What am I doing wrong?

I would love to see this have a floating digital display - something like the one in Clockworks - that can be made to stay on top of all the other windows, and have transparency adjustments. Awesome program as it is, though!

dan

I've just written a routine of about 20 minutes, saved it, and tried to export it to iTunes.

The "generatomg audio for iTunes" message comes up, but the bar never gets going from left to right. I left it for a couple hours and nothing happened... it's definitely not processing.

I had tried a shorter routine on another computer a couple weeks ago. The only difference is that now I'm on an Intel Mac.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brad

Very nice.

I am using an iSight along with EvoCam to record a timelapse my posture from the side. Maybe I'll try and do one of those snap-a-photo-without-me-in-it things and then when it sees me leave and come back, start/stop my routine automatically. LOL
