In Blogger, you can post with no headline, and still have it show up in the "Recent Posts" list: it uses the first 10 or 11 words of the post as a proxy. If I post from MarsEdit, on the other hand, and don't include a headline, Recent Posts ignores it: it's just a blank line. Is there a way to get Blogger to handle these posts the same way as it does internally? Sometimes a post doesn't feel right with a headline, but I don't want people to overlook it -- many people, rather than read the main blog page or the archives, use the Recent Posts list to bang through the posts as individual pages.

The drawer pops back to the left side as soon as I reopen it with more screen space.

Thanks.

I'm evaluating MarsEdit. As a test, I tried to upload a file to my WordPress blog. The upload failed, giving this message:

"Upload File Error
"Can't upload file for [name of blog] because the server reported an error: Could not write file [path and file name]."

I can upload via a separate FTP client (Transmit), but it would be nice not to have to do that. I've had the same problem with another blogging app (ecto) and with the WordPress interface running in a browser.

Does anyone have any idea why I'm having this problem? Obviously it's not just a MarsEdit problem. Can anyone suggest a solution?

For the past year, I've been frightened to use the spartan interface of the image uploading utility. It's difficult to explain, but it was oddly intimidating. That may be because it, like every other window, seems to be islands unto themselves – it appears to not be hooked to the main editing window.

How I've got my ME workflow setup is I have the three main panes set up with the MarsEdit window on the left, the working post in the middle, and the preview on the right. As it works now, the only time the preview window shows up is when the draft is open (which is correct, since you can't preview something that isn't there). The image panel, because it's independent of any draft, but would hook into any open post, can be open independently, confusing underachievers like me.

Here's what I thought about when I was looking at the Image & Files panel:

1. It'd be nifty if it was more tied to the edit window
2. If it's not going to be tied to the edit window (I can see how that could be a problem), maybe adding "Upload" to the "Upload & Insert"
3. Blogger, WordPress, Movable Type, and everybody else have their own schemes for upload archiving, and it would be neat if ME was aware of that, and gave you the option of filling in the default upload paths (or it had a drop-down menu)
4. If there was any place to put something like FlickIt, that'd be the place

I just started using MarsEdit earlier this year, and I'm still kicking myself for not using it earlier. Having a responsive developer only makes it seem that much better.

Older blogs, created under Old Blogger, then converted to New Blogger, detect as New Blogger, but the RPC settings appear to be the same (or similar) to Old Blogger, so those blogs do not work.

Is there a guide for manually specifying the New Blogger information? That would be fine for me and get me going again with the Old Blogger-created blogs.

Again, I am not trying to post to Old Blogger, just blogs that were originally created under Old Blogger, then converted.

Douglas

One request, that I also made a couple years back, and would still love:

Right now, if you have a URL in your "copy" memory (clipboard), you can autofill it into a link tag. But, as Kung-Log used to have, I'd love to be able to autofill ANY text you have on the clipboard, in your own custom tag. So I could copy a Person's name, for example, and when I triggered a custom tag, it automatically pasted the name into the appropriate spot. Only feature I truly missed when switching to MarsEdit.

And...

If I have a MT-based blog selected when I create a new posting window, it sets the formatting and comments options correctly. But If I am in something like a livejournal blog when i create the posting window, and then use the 'weblog' pulldown to switch to the MT-based blog, the 'comments' and 'formatting' options are both set to 'none'. And I'll often forget to check, and it gets posted improperly.

Hello,

I just started using ME for my Wordpress version 2.1 blog, and am enjoying it so far. I gave it the URL for my main index, and it downloaded all my old posts, but when I went back to look at them (I'd like to use ME to do technorati tagging) most of the carriage returns were stripped out. Same thing with new posts created within the program. So I'm getting these huge blobs of text that are almost impossible read easily, and editing is similarly problematic, as I'm not sure what will happen if I fix the line breaks in my archives, seeing as everything already looks fine when I upload. Other attributes, such as boldface tags, work fine.

I've done a little digging, and note that MarsEdit autoconfiged my blog as using the "Other MetaWeblog-compatable" option, instead of Wordpress. Any reason why it would choose this? (I've never heard of MetaWeblog, so I have no idea what it is.) Could this be part of my problem?

Thanks for the help. :D

Since writing a blog post is much like writing something that would be normally done in a word processing progam like MS Word, I think that the composition interface should have more writing tools. A good spelling/grammar checker, a thesaurus, and the ability to compose within your blog's template (as in editing in a live preview) would all be valuable assets to the program. Text and paragraph control would be a nice feature to add in - suppose I want to left-justify a paragraph? Something like a word-processor formatting toolbar would go a long way to being able to write without having to worry about how the layout will look when it's finished. I don't need to see markup tags when I'm writing my post - how about just showing the final result?

So how about it? Should I look for it in the next release? :)

Thanks!
-Kevin

Not sure how others may feel about this, but I find it very frustrating using MarsEdit where my normal working environment for HTML development is TextMate - no autocomplete, auto tags etc. So if I could hit a key combination to open the current post in TextMate, that'd be very useful. Maybe it wouldn't be too difficult as TextMate already provides the 'mate' shell command.

Hi Daniel,

Congrats on taking on MarsEdit. I look forward to seeing what you're going to add and improve.

I'd love to see a way to add photos to a post from iPhoto or the filesystem.

This is the one thing that ecto does that works really well for me -- it uploads two versions, a thumbnail which is included in the post, and the full-size photo, which is linked to from the thumbnail in the post. Very simple and very handy.

thanks!
Patrick

I had the marsedit demo a long time ago, and now that I actually have a job I bought a copy of the full version -- but I can't use it. Every time I try to retrieve posts from my blog (service: blogger) or try to make a new post, I get a blank error message (well, ".") and marsedit closes.

Is this because blogger changed in the interim, or am I the only one with this problem? If the former, I guess I'd like my money back; if the latter, does anyone have any suggestions?

Bug report: Markdown lists, particularly ordered

I have a couple example posts I'm using to test out my new site design and so this bug is the result of a rather contrived post in Markdown. Still it seems it should work. I have the following:

* Sushi
* Crackers
* Beer

1. Get Up
2. Read Blogs
3. Shower

The preview for that Markdown will place all the items in a single unordered list with bullets preceding each. Additionally it puts blank lines between Crackers and Beer and Get Up and Read Blogs. As I say it is a contrived example and probably not something most people would ever try to do in a blog entry, but it may be indicative of other issues with the list handling.

While working on my new site I figured I'd try a quick post to it from MarsEdit using Markdown. I've already got the Markdown plugin installed for WordPress and in fact the post looks fine on the blog. The trouble is seeing it in MarsEdit. On the Preview window if I attempt to change the Markdown it snaps back to None or Converting Line Breaks (whichever was previously selected). I see Markdown for a split second. I changed the Defaults for the blog so that the Preview Text Filter is Markdown and this causes it to work, but now if I try to change the Formatting choice in the Preview window it snaps back to Markdown :) Its not really a big deal, but it does seem like an odd UI convention. Why let me interact with the popup if I can't actually change it. The important thing of course is that I could send the post to WordPress and it worked!

I recently purchased NetNewsWire (10 days ago :o) and received a coupon code for $10 off my next purchase. I was interested in MarsEdit, but it hadn't been updated in some time, so I thought I'd play the Wait-and-See game. I waited, and saw an acquisition :P Is there any chance that I could redeem my discount code, or should I just suck it up?
