How do folks use their iPads with MarsEdit?
  • A couple of days ago, I decided to take another look at MarsEdit for updating my blog (shameless: http://punchingin.com). For the most part, it's working well, but I'm wondering how other folks are using MarsEdit with their iPad to write posts.

I write my posts in Markdown using WriteRoom on the Mac and either Writer or Plaintext on the iPad. Drafts are stored in my DropBox, so they are accessible so long as I can get my iPad onto the Internet.

In looking at MarsEdit, though, I've not been able to figure out a workflow that will allow me the same flexibility. I am fine copying the completed post to the site using the web UI. All I need to do from the iPad is write.

Has anyone figured out a solution for this?

  • I mostly use MarkdownMail and use Markdown to format before uploading as HTML. Sometimes I will use Elements to write post, with TextExpanders snippets for HTML and then copy/paste.

There is also a an iPad Wordpress app which i use for uploading only because it doesn't support TextExpander.
  • Thanks, taphagreg. I've got and used all of those. It all still feels very kludgy to me, even moreso if I end up wanting to insert a photo or video into my post and I try to do that from my iPad. The Mac is still the better tool for those kind of tasks, I find.
  • Welcome to the joys of HTML¡ Ultimately, this is a limitation is caused by using a markup syntax.

As nicely as I can, I suggest changing the way you think about writing from using desktop publishing program (such as MS Word) to using unformatted text (more like HTML Markup).

Then the 'Zen' won't feel so clunky. It took me a number of years, but I may be on the path of enlightenment.
