Titling blog entries
  • Hi. I am brand new with MarsEdit and would appreciate some help with two (perhaps connected) questions to do with titles. First of all, is it possible to add a title when posting an image? There's no title field available. And, secondly, how do I insert an image to a blog post without losing the post's title?

Many thanks for any help you can give me and apologies if I am missing the obvious! :-)

    Best wishes.

  • Hi Tom - I'm assuming you are referring to a visible title that would appear next to the image in the post? A "caption" of sorts? Unfortunately, MarsEdit doesn't currently support the ability to easily add this to images in a post.

I'm not sure I understand the second part of your question. Inserting an image shouldn't change the title of the post. Can you clarify what you mean exactly?

  • Hi Daniel - Thanks for getting back to me. On the second point... I opened a new post and the template in MarsEdit gave me the option to add a title, which I did, along with a slug and tags. Then I inserted an image to the post but once I did that, the template for the post switched to Photo and the title option was lost.

Is that clearer? Apologies for the first attempt being mixed up!

Btw, I am new to blogging but your programme is a great help so many thanks indeed.

  • Thanks, Tom, that does clarify a lot, and lets me know that you are using a Tumblr-style blog. You're running into a shortcoming with Tumblr's "API" (interface MarsEdit uses to communicate with it), that unfortunately MarsEdit has to pass along to you.

In Tumblr blogs, there is currently no way for MarsEdit to upload an image to be used as part of a regular post. So when you drop in an image to a Tumblr post, I have to switch the format over to the "Photo" type post, which in turn is limited to only one photo, and doesn't support a Title (just like in the Tumblr dashboard).

This is something I've been asking Tumblr to add for a long time, but it hasn't been a priority for them. If you are inspired to drop them a line it would help if they hear from more people that they would appreciate:

"The ability for API clients to upload an arbitrary image and get a URL back for embedding in the content of a regular blog post."

Thanks for your patience while I got to the bottom of what you were describing.
