Kind of a crazy request - save local drafts as .txt for easier iPad use
  • Hey Daniel! I have a rather odd request for iOS/MarsEdit draft editing that I thought I'd throw out.

Here's a use case I'd love to be able to work out:

    - Use MarsEdit on my desktop as normal.
    - Create a symlink from my ~/library/application support/marsedit/localdrafts folder to a folder like ~/dropbox/elements/localdrafts folder inside of dropbox (elements is an iOS dropbox text editor).
    - I could then edit local drafts using Elements on iOS devices and it would also sync to MarsEdit.
    - Publishing posts would still be done via the desktop app, but I'd prefer that anyway.

Currently, the local drafts folder saves files in files that end in .marsedit so I can't make this scenario work out. I'm sure there are dozens of reasons that you use your own format, but thought I'd throw that out there. I'm sure there are a handful of metadata issues that would happen if a new .txt file showed up in that directory and wasn't created by MarsEdit, so it might not be possible.

I might be a crazy person for even suggesting this approach, but it's the 'easiest' way to create a way for iOS users to quickly write blog posts on their device before syncing back to MarsEdit for final cleanup.
  • Hi Daniel - it's a good idea. I'm not sure what the best solution is: whether it's to support a standard text format, or to focus on finally getting a real version of MarsEdit for iOS that can support syncing. In any case I realize this is a valuable use case.
  • If that's crazy, so am I. I'd really like automatic local archiving of posts as .txt every time I send one, as well.

And oh my God, MarsEdit for iOS would be incredible. Re: comment in http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/1445/suck-it-up-and-ship, I'd say a HTML/Markdown-only version would be a great start. If that pushes any rich texters into spending 20 minutes on learning Markdown, you'll have done them a massive favour by that alone. Is there any news on this since October?
  • Hi samu - sorry, I don't have any news. It's disappointing to me that it's been this long without a MarsEdit for iOS to share. All I can say is I'm still working on it and it will be ready when it's ready.
