Topic: Tags not working properly in 2.1

I'm not really sure what is causing the problem but If I enter in tags in and upload to the my Wordpress site,  the tags disappear. I've tried to enter them multiple ways. With the pills around each tag and no commas, with the pills and commas and no pills. Nothing seems to work right. The only way I was able to get it to work is to enter them in one by one with generating the pill and then going back in and entering in the commas. It's acting very funky. Also the field acts weird as well. Sometimes I can highlight the text in it and sometimes I can't.

Also, and this is a feature request, would be great to add TAGS to the posting warnings list.

Drainyoo: Is it possible you have some kind of tags related plugin installed on your site? Also, can you confirm which version of WordPress you are running? 

The omission of Tags from the post warnings list was an oversight. I'll be sure to get that fixed for 2.1.1.

Robertm: Again the big question is what version of WordPress are you running. If you've upgraded since you first added the blog to MarsEdit, you might need to open up the blog settings and click the 'Auto-Detect Settings' button again, to give MarsEdit a fresh understanding of your blog's capabilities.

I'm not using any tag plugins and I'm running version 2.3.2.

It's WordPress 2.3.2. I tried Auto-Detect but Tag Fields is still greyed out.

With EE 1.61 core (on localhost, after clicking Auto-Detect) I opened a post, created a tag "marsedit" and clicked Send to Weblog. It was gone when I reopened the post. Here is part of the Network log. Should the actual tag appear in it?

I haven't tested trying to use Tags on EE at all. For the purposes of 2.1 the only supported systems for Tags are WordPress and Movable Type. I'm sure there are others that I can figure out how to support (possibly in cooperation with the systems), but for now I am sorry to stay those systems are not supported for the Tags field, even if the Tags field does show up as visible in MarsEdit.  I am planning to do some research on EE because it is getting more popular and I'm getting more requests about it. When I do, I'll be sure to look at the tags situation.

For your Movable Type blog, what version is it? I think they added Tags support in 3.3 or so.

For your WordPress 2.3.2 blog, can you point me at the home page? I am curious why it's not working correctly. After you Auto-Detect, does it show "WordPress" as the blog system in the settings window?

drainyoo: will you please capture a network log and send it to me?

1. Open Window -> Network Log
2. Clear the log.
3. Make a new post with tags and send it to your blog.
4. Wait for the post to send and all activity to stop in MarsEdit.

Send me the resulting log content?

I will see what I can make of it.

Daniel, it seems to be working now. I did Auto-Detect and after that it worked. That could have been the problem. Thanks.

Daniel, something else I noticed that might be causing the issue again. At home I have Leopard installed and after auto-detecting the tags worked fine. Here at work I have 10.4 installed and it's where I'm having the problem again. One thing I noticed is that on my work machine, I don't get the "Check grammer" option in the preferences. Nothing is there under check spelling but at home I do get it. Could there be an issue with 2.1 on 10.4?

Grammar checking is a 10.5-only feature.

You can count on this being the case for pretty much any Cocoa apps (particularly from indie devs) that offer grammar checking capabilities.  Apple added grammar checking in Leopard.

Update: I have confirmed the same symptoms on my MacBook Pro running 10.4. I confess I did most of the testing on 10.5, and I guess the same is true for my beta testers. Really sorry about this gaffe, but I'll get it fixed ASAP.

If anybody is experiencing problems NOT on 10.4, I'd love to hear about that, too.

Daniel,

The tags are now working. I noticed that the posts I published with the 2.1 "official" version that has the tag bug now have blank tags. But if I delete it and enter new tags, they work just fine.

Daniel, it seems to be working. Thanks for the quick fix.

I did find another issue with the tags. Since WP rearranges the tags alphabetically, sometimes it seems to move the "," as well. For example. If I type "walk, run, jump" as tags into MarsEdit, it shows up as ", jump, run, walk". Not sure why this is happening but it's very random. I'm going to keep an eye on it some more and see if I can get any more details for you.

Thanks, that is interesting to know. If you see it happen again, try to peek quickly in the Network Log from MarsEdit, so you can see whether it's MarsEdit mixing up the order or not. (You can send me the log if it's hard to tell).

FYI the issue with tags not working on 10.4 is resolved officially in 2.1.1:

Here is what I just noticed...

On my imac, I had installed Marsedit, and put my site url as atheist.nu/blog, and tags/tag field worked. On my laptop, I did the install, and had put my site url as atheist.nu. Tags weren't working, and the tag field was greyed out. I changed my url to /blog, and right away tags showed again in my posts...Maybe not the same problem, but it fixed it for me...

Interesting point. Thanks for giving me these details. To know that the sites is "tags ready" MarsEdit has to examine the home page of the blog. So maybe it's not following the redirects that cause your atheist.nu URL to redirect to the /blog address.
