Topic: Disappearing shortcuts
I just noticed that when I add or edit a custom tag, my custom shortcuts disappear. I'm using 1.1.5 under OS X 10.4.8. I did not try creating custom tags under earlier versions.

Wow! Thanks, Craig. I just reproduced this, too. The good news is when I quit and restarted MarsEdit, they were all back.
So my advice until I figure out and fix this bug, is after editing a custom tag, quit and restart ME ASAP to make sure your existing shortcuts are preserved.
This is an ugly one - really appreciate your reporting it.
Daniel
Thanks for reporting this, Craig. MarsEdit 1.1.7 is now available, and should fix it!
I am experiencing this problem in 1.2.1 - though as suggested shortcuts do reappear after a restart it is a little disconcerting.
Martin
Martin - does it happen consistently for you? Or is it only from time to time?
It is happening consistently for me.
(I've been stuck offline for much of the past few months, but yesterday finally got Internet service, so I hope to be a bit more active in the forum going forward.)
--Craig
Craig - and you're also running on 1.2.1 now?
I was able to easily reproduce the problem back in 1.1.5, and fixed it for 1.1.8. So if it's still happening I think it must be a slightly different, perhaps more subtle cause.
I wonder if either or both of you can peek in your system console log (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) and see if MarsEdit prints anything interesting out when the bug is being exhibited.
Daniel
Dear Daniel,
I was having a problem with 1.2.1 and you suggested I back up a version to test things further. I did, reverting to 1.2, but then I had to put my Mac in the shop for a different problem. I just got it back (along with Internet access) but haven't worked on that problem yet.
When I edited the custom tags list, nothing showed up in the RPC Console. This is in 1.2, but I think it happened on 1.2.1 on my backup Mac as well. (I didn't check the RPC Console.)
The problem was indeed fixed earlier on, but it somehow seems to have come back for me.
--Craig
Craig - just to be clear - I am more interested for this bug in the "System" console, which you have to open separately from MarsEdit. Because the symptoms of the bug sound like it could be some misbehavior inside MarsEdit when the new shortcuts are added, I'm hoping it causes some diagnostic output to be printed.
Oops. Nothing new showed up in Console when I edited the custom tags, but this showed up when I opened MarsEdit.

I used KeyCue briefly when I switched from Windows but haven't used it for a long time. It must have migrated with me when I switched to my newer Mac. I have no idea if it relates to this problem.
--Craig
Glad to find another MarsEdit'er in Japan.
FAQ page in the KeyQue explains how you unintall KeyQue.
As we don't know if KeyQue is a cause, it's safe to say we can norrow a little more down the cause. KeyQues seems to be a hack-ish app, though.
I tried Takaaki's suggestion and deleted the ScriptingAddition for KeyCue. However, that did not seem to fix the problem.
The Console log still give the other error when MarsEdit launches, but doesn't record anything when the problem occurs.
Here is the Console log.

Thanks Takaaki for helping out with the good advice to disable KeyQue. Another thing that's worth trying would be to remove that Smart Crash Reports bundle. I don't have any particular reason to mistrust it - but the fact that it seems to be having trouble loading, would make me curious if removing caused any improvement.
Daniel, I removed the bundle, launched MarsEdit and tried editing my custom tags. The shortcuts still disappear whenever I do (and reappear after I quit and relaunch). This time nothing at all showed up in the Console from launch through editing the tags. Still a mystery.
--Craig
OK thanks - I will look at the code and see if I can figure out any other possible reasons for the failure.
I haven't tried editing shortcuts for a while, but I just did and, sorry to say, they all disappeared after I added a new one. This time they weren't restored by quitting and relaunching.
From the lack of feedback on the forum, I may be the only one experiencing this problem, but still I thought I should update you.
--Craig
Hi Craig - since this topic was last active, MarsEdit 2 came out. So can you clarify whether you're seeing the problem now in MarsEdit 2 or MarsEdit 1?
Daniel
Sorry. I should have done that. MarsEdit 2.0.3.
And speaking of MarsEdit 2, I like the changes and improvements.
--Craig
Craig - before too much time passes, can you look in your console and see if there were any messages printed by MarsEdit when the bug happened?
The Console log was filled with a lot of unrelated WebKit errors, so rather than wade through all of that, I cleared the log and tried editing shortcuts again. I found something unremarkable, something surprising and something embarrassing.
The unremarkable thing was that nothing appeared in the Console.
The surprising thing is that, though the shortcuts don't appear in the Markup menu, they do appear in the Markup Macros edit window.
The embarrassing thing is that they work. I was misremembering the shortcuts I had created, so when I pressed option-command-whatever, I got the system error TONK sound. I should have been using CONTROL-option-command-whatever.
Being able to see the shortcuts in the menu would be helpful, especially for less frequently used shortcuts and especially for idiots like me who can't remember what they just created, but at least the shortcuts are working.
--Craig
I have the same problem.
MarsEdit 2.0.3 + Mac OS X Leopard 10.5
Ouch - I realize I just seriously misunderstood the behavior being reported, because I was conflating the bug report from previously with a new (intentional) behavior in 2.0.3 and later.
In 2.0.3 and later, the shortcuts themselves *never* show up in the popup menu. This is unfortunate, and I would have liked to have left them there, but it turned out to cause trouble with having them in both the popup menu and in the main menu (Post -> Markup).
I wanted to show the markup items in the main menu, for completeness and because otherwise users who hide the toolbar can't use the macros. But an unfortunate sacrifice is I can't *show* the shortcuts in the popup. The shortcuts should still work, however.
Daniel
Thank you for the explanation. So it's not a bug at all. I'll just have to make my shortcuts more memorable or check them via the menu bar. I wasn't even aware of the Post > Text Markup menu. In fact I hadn't explored the menus at all. That's unusual for me, but it's an indication of how thorough and intuitive the interface is otherwise.
--Craig
Thanks for understanding. Yeah- I don't think it's a bug, but I can definitely see how after getting used to seeing them in the popup, it's alarming that they've disappeared.
